To reset or recover the Ubuntu root password, you need to boot Ubuntu using Advanced options for Ubuntu in the grub menu. Let us follow the steps one by one.
Steps to recover the ubuntu root password
Step1 Turn on your PC loaded with Ubuntu 20.4 or 18.04


Step2
Hover on Advanced options for Ubuntu (2nd option) hit enter

Step3
Hover on the 1st option and press e on your keyboard. To switch to edit mode.

Step4
Search for the exact words and remove the words “ro quiet splash” using the back space key.

Step5
Now type at same as shown below rw init=/bin/bash

Step6
Press F10 to reboot.

Step7
You will see you are logged in to the root shell

Step8
Now change the user password type command
$ passwd username


Step9
Change root password
$ passwd


Step10
Type both of the commands
$ sync
$ reboot –f
