In this blog, we will install TOR on ubuntu. You can do the same thing on any Debian based OS. Before this blog, you might have used the tor browser to access TOR PRIXY. Tor routes your internet traffic from different DNS proxy servers. In this blog, we will do the same thing. We are not going to use proxy chains OR TOR BROWSER to achieve our goal.

The requirements to follow our blog and start using the TOR proxy on Firefox:

1. Tor should be installed in your Linux OS (Not tot browser)
2. You should have Firefox 84 or 85 (Firefox 85 is an update of firefox that will be announced on 26 January 2020)

What is TOR?
Tor is one of the best and easiest ways to browse the web without leaking the IP and DNS information. Tor makes you 100% anonymous on the internet. Tor is useful for someone who wants to protect their internet history and privacy by hiding IP, DNS from their ISP. Publically available website advertizers. You can also use it to bypass censorship restrictions in your country.

We will set up everything to anonymize ourselves in few easy steps written below:
Step (I) Setup Tor and services
How to install tor on Ubuntu 20.4 or older version? First, you need to install Tor on the Linux os. Open a terminal by pressing CTRL + T and type the command to install the tor service:
$ sudo apt install tor

To start the Tor service run the command.
$ sudo service tor start

You may face errors As shown in the image below. Use the command to resolve the error.
$ sudo service tor restart

To check tor running status must run the command (press q to exit the process window)
$ sudo tor service status

To check the tor version
$ tor --version

To stop the tor service run the command
$ sudo service tor stop

To check your tor ip follow the command


Step (II) Create IP Changer
Change IP after every 1 second Please copy the script written below and save it as Run.sh. Make sure you should start the TOR service first. By using commands written above. To run the script follow the commands:
$ chmod +x Run.sh

$ bash run.sh

Step (III) Configure Mozilla Firefox proxy settings
How to configure Mozilla Firefox proxy settings with Tor Proxy on Ubuntu
To configure the proxy settings on a Mozilla Firefox:
Step 1: Double-click and launch Mozilla Firefox.


Step 2: Click on three small lines (top right) Known as Firefox Menu (on firefox 84 and 85).


Step 3: Click Preferences, go to the bottom of the page.


Step 4: Under Network settings, click on settings... button.


Step 5: Click on Manual proxy configuration under Configure Proxy Access to the Internet.


Step 6: Under SOCKS Host Enter IP as 127.0.0.1, Port as 9050 (Tor running on). Click SOCKS v5


Step 7: Scroll down and type under No proxy for localhost,127.0.0.1


Step 8: Come to the end of the windows and checkmark Proxy DNS when using SOCKS v5


Step 9: Press okay and save the settings.



The 2nd method to configure the Mozilla firefox proxy settings page is, simply paste about:preferences in the URL bar and hit enter. Skip Steps 1, 2, and 3.


Step (IV) surf the web and Onion Websites anonymously
Start using the internet with TOR proxy on Firefox

Step 1: Open new tab (Close the settings tab)

Step 2: Make sure Run.sh should run and change IP. In case TOR servicer stopped it would not work.

Step 3: In the newly opened tab type google.com or DuckduckGo.com I'll suggest using DuckduckGo.com to avoid security checks. Still some sites will ask you to verify.

Step 4: Search for ipchicken.com inside duckduck go. DuckDuckGo never keeps your internet history.

Step 5: Refresh the page after it loads and see the new locations turning to an unknown location again and again. If you are in Asia it will route you to Europe. If you are in Europe it will route you to Asia most of the time.

Step 6: Again visit duckduckgo.com search for dnsleaktest.com or directly visit. Click on DNS Standard test, it will show you the DNS info for the TOR server you are connected to.
